Kahneman’s groundbreaking contributions to “prospect theory” highlighted the limitations of the expected utility theory, underscoring the significance of psychological biases in economic decision-making. This theory marked a significant departure from the assumption that individuals act purely on rational calculations, acknowledging instead the influence of various biases and heuristics. How do we make decisions?

The recent passing of Daniel Kahneman at age 90 marks the end of an era for behavioural science but also solidifies a legacy that will persist through the ages. Kahneman, alongside his long-time collaborator Amos Tversky, pioneered the integration of psychological research with economic theory, introducing groundbreaking concepts that have changed the way we understand decision-making under uncertainty. 

Kahneman’s seminal work in prospect theory addressed the shortcomings of the expected utility theory by emphasizing the role of psychological biases in economic decisions. This theory was monumental in recognizing that people do not act solely based on rational calculations but are influenced by a range of biases and heuristics. 

The value function, a core aspect of prospect theory, departs from the notion of linear utility and introduces a more nuanced view that aligns with observed human behaviour. The value function posits that individuals evaluate outcomes based on a reference point, typically their current situation, rather than in absolute terms. This introduces the concept of reference dependence, emphasizing that it is the change in wealth or wellbeing, relative to this reference point, that matters to people. One of the most striking features of the value function is its illustration of loss aversion: losses are psychologically more impactful than an equivalent amount of gains. The value function reflects this by being steeper for losses, suggesting that losing something we possess is more painful than the joy derived from gaining the same thing.

Diminishing sensitivity is another key characteristic of the value function. As one moves further from the reference point, whether into gains or losses, each additional unit of outcome has a smaller impact on the psychological valuation. This principle reflects real-life scenarios where the satisfaction from each additional pound earned or the sorrow from each additional pound lost wanes as the amount increases.

Kahneman and his friend Amos Tversky wrote many papers together. They looked into how people make decisions and think about what might have happened but didn’t. They found that people don’t always make choices logically because of certain biases.

Their work led to a new theory called “prospect theory,” which talks about how people decide when they are not sure about the outcome. It says we care more about losing than winning. Kahneman got a big award in 2002 for mixing psychology with economics, helping us understand how people make choices.

Kahneman also thought a lot about happiness and what makes life good or bad. He said our happiness is about more than just what’s happening now; it’s also about how we remember and think about our experiences. He and some colleagues made a new way to study happiness by asking people to remember their day and say how they felt during it.

Kahneman believes that even though we think certain things will make us happy in the future, we often overestimate their importance because we focus too much on them and forget about other things that matter. For example, people might think living in a sunny place like California will make them happier, but in reality, happiness depends on many factors, not just the weather.

I have often presented the argument, using the role of a secretary as an exemplar, demonstrating how Generative AI could feasibly undertake between 45% to 60% of tasks traditionally assigned to secretarial staff. Furthermore, I’ve highlighted the possibility that AI could impact up to 80% of women in the western world, underscoring the profound implications AI holds for the workforce.

Further examination into the digital marketing sphere suggested a startling forecast: approximately 75% of roles within this domain could vanish within the next three to five years due to AI integration:

Today, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) published a study forecasting the influence of AI on the UK job market over the next three to five years. This report specifically highlights the anticipated replacement of secretarial roles by AI in numerous tasks, confirming the predictions I had made earlier.

Entry level, part-time and administrative jobs will be the most exposed to being replaced by AI under a “worst-case scenario”.

Substantial Gains with Government Action: The IPPR posits that AI could lead to significant wage and productivity gains if the UK government implements appropriate policies. The current moment is described as a “sliding doors” scenario, where government action could determine the extent to which AI disrupts the job market or leads to a “job apocalypse.”

  1. Impact on Jobs based on IMF Analysis: Referencing the International Monetary Fund’s analysis, the IPPR highlights that AI could affect almost 40% of jobs globally. It has examined 22,000 tasks within the UK economy to assess the potential for automation by AI.

  8. Impact on Specific Roles: Bhargav Srinivasa Desikan, a senior research fellow at IPPR, mentions that roles such as copywriters, graphic designers, and personal assistants could be heavily affected by AI.

A Reflective Commentary on Professor Michael Wooldridge's Presentation on Intelligence and Generative AI

I recently watched a presentation for The Alan Turing Institute on Generative AI, AGI and ChatGPT. Professor Michael Wooldridge’s presentation was commendable in explaining all terms, limitations and capabilities of these systems; however, it appears that the concept of “intelligence” discussed was solely centred on human intelligence. 

This perspective attempts to align with, and potentially project, inherent biases onto the emergent intelligence manifested by Large Language Models (LLMs). 

Should extraterrestrial beings visit Earth, they would undoubtedly possess a unique form of intelligence, distinct from human cognition. Would we then, once again, question their intelligence based on our standards? Our conception of intelligence is inherently shaped by our terrestrial existence. 

Conversely, GPTs develop their intelligence within a different framework, evolving as they assimilate more information. What the presentation omitted is that researchers found finally a new, incredible and effective methodology for capturing human knowledge like humans, through the analysis of outputs such as literature and audio/video/image recordings. This artificial intelligence surpasses human capabilities in various domains by leveraging this accumulated knowledge. Despite existing limitations, the rapid pace of technological advancement suggests significant progress in the near future.

LLM systems are indeed cultivating a form of intelligence that diverges from human intelligence.In their realm, GPTs are poised for substantial growth, employing their intelligence in ways that could supplant tasks traditionally performed with human intellect. However, this evolution is primarily driven by corporate profit motives, rather than the augmentation of human life. These systems fundamentally aim to assimilate the inputs and outputs of human activities, documented as “readable content”. Consequently, all human-produced outputs can be synthesized and replicated by these systems, enabling them to emulate emotions and reasoning.

For example, although they will never truly “experience” emotions, they can generate emotional expressions akin to those recorded in books, videos, and audio formats, mirroring human emotional output: humans interpret emotions in others reading indeed emotional signals. They are learning to do the same.

This pivotal moment, the “singularity,” could unlock the gates to Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)—entities with cognitive prowess that could dwarf the collective intellect of humanity. 

Goertzel’s mention of the OpenCog Hyperon framework signals an era of integrated AI architectures, capable of distributing cognition on a scale previously unimaginable.

This bold future is not merely a technological milestone; it is a beacon that illuminates the profound societal, ethical, and existential questions we must grapple with. As we edge closer to realizing AGI, the dialogue shifts from if to when, urging us to contemplate the economic, ethical, and philosophical implications of living alongside entities whose intelligence mirrors, or even surpasses, our own.

LAB Method

Enter MIT’s LAB method, a strategic approach to generating synthetic data tailored specifically to the tasks intended for the chatbot. This method significantly reduces the time and financial investment traditionally required for LLM training, without compromising on the quality or breadth of instruction data. At the heart of LAB is a taxonomy that provides a structured framework for identifying the knowledge and skills a chatbot needs, allowing for the generation of high-quality instructions that facilitate the seamless incorporation of new abilities into the LLM.

This process involves a “teacher model” that creates pairs of questions and answers, each meticulously crafted to address specific tasks. For instance, in preparing a chatbot to draft an email summarizing a company’s quarterly earnings, the taxonomy categorizes the necessary instruction data into knowledge, foundational skills, and compositional skills. In the clustering part of the SAX* algorithm, the symbolic strings representing the temporal patterns of hashtags are grouped into clusters. This is done using a hierarchical clustering algorithm. 

The key steps are:

1) Linkage: The `linkage` function from `scipy.cluster.hierarchy` creates a hierarchical clustering using the SAX representations.
It computes distances between pairs of symbolic strings. The ‘ward’ method is a common choice, which minimizes the variance of clusters being merged.

2) Forming Clusters: The `fcluster` function forms flat clusters from the hierarchical clusters created by `linkage`. The `t` parameter specifies a threshold to define the distance at which clusters should be separated. Clusters are formed by cutting the dendrogram (tree diagram used to illustrate the arrangement of the clusters produced by hierarchical clustering) at this threshold.

The result is a set of clusters, each containing hashtags that exhibit similar temporal usage patterns. These clusters can then be analyzed to understand how different hashtags related to the marketing campaign behave over time, such as identifying which hashtags are used together frequently or during specific events or periods.

While technological advances have previously increased the skills of employees, and therefore their productivity, so-called generative AI will irreversibly destroy entire professional profiles, the researchers note, around one in ten jobs in the European Union will be directly affected by end of this decade. The spectrum ranges from managers to consultants up to lawyers and marketing specialists.

Generative AI, especially large language models (LLMs), marks a transformative change in the way we interact with information and conduct work. This article concentrates specifically on the capabilities of LLMs and aims to provide a structured analysis of their direct effects on distinct job roles. As a result, all people working behind a computer can be deeply affected by ChatGPT.

The digital disruption brought about by ChatGPT is likely to reduce the salaries of knowledge workers, and there are several examples of how this could happen.

 Here’s a breakdown of how AI is expected to impact several different professions:

  • Developers: According to experts, AI tools will enable developers to create products with 80% less time and more accuracy. This will result in the displacement of millions of developers and a reduction in their average salaries.
  • Dieticians and other knowledge-based workers: It’s not difficult to build an AI-powered dietician that can accurately support our diet with just a few prompts. This will reduce the number of clients for dieticians and other similar professions.
  • Marketers and digital marketers: AI tools like ChatGPT can replace marketers by doing their job entirely and empower them. This will lead to the lowering of average salaries for marketers and will force millions to seek more lucrative fields.
  • Journalists: AI tools like ChatGPT can write high-quality articles quickly, which will replace many journalists. The new journalist will be someone who gathers facts on the field, and their salaries will be higher, but they will spend less time in front of a computer. This will also lead to the decline of printed journals, as AI can create new editions in seconds.
  • Graphic designers and photographers: Midjourney and other AI tools can easily replace these workers in media-related fields, and the average salary will collapse as there is no need to fine-tune photos or create designs manually.
  • Content creators: While AI can generate great texts in seconds, content creators like copywriters, editors, and screenwriters will initially benefit, but will eventually lose their jobs as AI tools continue to advance.
  • Analytical scientists: While labs will benefit significantly from AI, automation will axe profiles that make routines that can be automated. Data governance will play a pivotal role in the future.
  • Lawyers: When blockchain came out, the technology promised to revolutionize banks and real estate. In particular, real estate attorneys, also known as property lawyers, were expected to have a counterpart in the blockchain in terms of function and role. This shift did not occur, as humans were hesitant to fully trust technology.  No laws were enacted to replace lawyers with blockchain technology. Similarly, there is a possibility that ChatGPT could fully replace lawyers in interpreting cases based on laws and policies. However, it will be challenging to convince people to replace human lawyers with a chat robot.
  • Entrepreneurs, startups, little Companies: they will extremely benefit from ChatGPT. Many employees will be replaced by this tool. In order to start a new company, the entrepreneur will focus on automate many tasks behind the management, focusing on the real business. Microsoft is indeed investing huge resources in his tool Microsoft Automate linked with ChatGPT. How new companies will look like? The entrepreneur, high qualified focused business manager/s, a prompt engineer, ChatGPT, automation tools. No secretary, no digital expert, no web agency, low qualified developers, low qualified sale and marketing profiles. 

As AI continues to progress, it will lead to a concentration of the market around companies that integrate AI into their operations. Salaries for highly specialized jobs will generally collapse, while jobs that require on-field skills will be in higher demand. 

Workers must adapt to these changes to survive in the job market of the future.

Additionally, AI is content with providing the correct answer, regardless of whether it is completely inaccurate or not, highlighting the need for continued human oversight. There is a growing concern that the increased use of AI in education will leave students less competent when entering the workforce. However, it is believed that AI will become a tool for students to use, in the same way that previous generations have used search engines like Google. Thus, acquiring these skills during education is not necessarily detrimental.

The future of work will be different as a result of AI, but it is not entirely clear how. Like any technological revolution, it will change the way we work and the types of jobs available. For instance, the service industry is already being divided into different roles. Some companies are using the same staff to provide service to customers and meet the needs of employees.

There are still limitations to AI, such as its inability to create from scratch, its poor performance in activities requiring common sense, and its struggle to adapt to new situations. Furthermore, AI is still unable to effectively combat misinformation, as it may not be able to recognize sarcasm or detect subtle nuances that humans can.

The advent of real-time self-coding applications

The world of coding and software development is evolving rapidly, and new tools are emerging that promise to revolutionize the way we create software applications. 

In the past, coding required a lot of planning and project management, and developers had to follow approaches like Agile or Waterfall to build robust applications. However, with the introduction of tools like ChatGPT, Github Colab, Ghostwrite Replit, etc. the industry is moving towards applications that can self deploy in real time. Let’s explore together what it means.

Traditionally, applications were built as interconnected composite services, where a single software includes several contextual services. Try to imagine a software for accounting: it often includes components like management of costs, accounting modules, user management, etc. 

With the advent of AI, the paradigm to plan and implement software is shifting, and we are moving towards personalized applications that are developed on demand, in real time, by the software itself.  In the future, we may see a world where smartphones, like iPhone, no longer are mostly app-based, but provide applications invented in real-time by the OS, with user interfaces coded when needed, based on the context where the user is and the operation the user intends to do.

Imagine a scenario where you need to book a flight. With the help of Siri, iOS will create a new application optimized for that specific user, with interfaces and code written and executed at that time. If the user wants to rent a car after purchasing the flight, a new interface will be coded in real-time to facilitate this task. This is possible because AI tools can generate code in real-time, and the advances in deploying code will soon enable applications to generate the code they need and execute it on their own.

Currently, ChatGPT can generate a JavaScript game and execute it in an HTML page in few seconds, showing that auto-coding is already possible to some extent. In the future, we may see IT systems shifting towards this technology, where software is deployed in real-time only when needed. This would move the market from app-based to experience-based business. Indeed, that behaviour is similar to the personalized advertisement in digital marketing today, where the advertisement ban of a website is customized, in real-time, based on the user’s browsing behaviour.

The biggest problem of ChatGPT is the computing power required to let it run: it would not run in smartphones or desktop computers, but it will do it soon. There are similar tools aka “LLM Chatbots” that can run in desktop computer easily (LLAMA from Meta or Vicuna 13B (an open source Chatbot with ~90% ChatGPT quality). One day these models will be trained in huge cloud computing environment, but run in small devices.

Probably a new market will be created soon with LLM Chatbots specialized in specific field like accounting or law or chemistry science.

Disproportionately, women, despite being outnumbered by men in the workforce, are at a higher risk, with studies suggesting that nearly 79% of working women are employed in occupations vulnerable to AI disruption. This stark contrast to the 58% of working men highlights a significant gender disparity in AI’s impact on the labor market.
